ABSTRACT
IS THE PATIENT’S LIFE AT RISK? ■ Active bleeding (i.e., gastrointestinal tract bleed) in patient
with thrombocytopenia can lead to life-threatening hemorrhage.
■ Platelet counts <10 × 109/L are associated with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage and require immediate evaluation.
■ Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) activates platelets and is associated with potentially life-threatening thrombosis (myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular accident, deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, arterial thrombosis)
