ABSTRACT
DEFINITION ■ Pneumonia-cough, fever, and new infiltrate on chest X-
ray (regardless of sputum production) ■ Nosocomial pneumonia-new pulmonary infiltrate and fever
developing after 48 hours of hospitalization
CLASSIFICATION AND ETIOLOGY Community-Acquired Pneumonia ■ “Typical” and “atypical” usually refer to organism causing
disease; there is loose association with presentation (see below).
