ABSTRACT

The fields of Biomedical Engineering and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) share a special reciprocity. On one hand, biomedical products, including instrumentation, devices, bioinformatics systems and robots, are becoming increasingly reliant on information technology (IT). HCI factors are principal determinants of the adoption, effectiveness, and safe use of these products. On another hand, biomedical research and data play an important role in human-computer interface technology. Biomedical factors will increasingly require consideration as HCI technology extends to incorporate alternative modalities of interaction.
