The preceding chapters were aimed at reviewing the methods of obtaining the most efficacious insect

repellents for protection against bites of medically important arthropods. Public perceptions of active

ingredients and formulations are an important aspect of repellent use anywhere in the world. These

perceptions are crucial to achieving the potential protection offered by a product because a repellent

cannot be effective if it is not used. In this chapter, we discuss what people perceive to be a “good

repellent” and how this has influenced the use of insect repellents in areas where biting insects and

arthropods are a menace.
