ABSTRACT

This is particularly the case for the science of chemical synthesis. One notable feature of the discipline is its ability to continue to evolve in new directions in ways that redefine the synthesis of molecules and, consequently, provide access to entities not previously readily accessible. This, in turn, leads to the tangible result of providing novel scaffolds or building blocks, which can serve as starting points for the preparation of new drugs. In addition to providing novel molecular launching points for drug discovery, it is possible to consider access to small molecular units that may be appended onto scaffolds of interest, which in turn can impart or modulate the physicochemical properties of a molecule.
