ABSTRACT

Most healthy humans will obtain one or more species of mites from their mother and carry these with them for the rest of their life. The sebaceous glands and hair follicles of humans and most mammals are inhabited by symbiotic follicular mites of the family Demodecidae (Acari: Prostigmata) (Krantz, 1978; Evans, 1992; Walter and Proctor, 1999; Desch, 2009). The follicular mites develop in synchrony with their human hosts. They accomplish their complete life cycle inside the human skin, being restricted to the pilose- baceous glands.
