Starting from the premise that all software could or, indeed, should be constructed as an autonomic system, this chapter examines the resulting implications for the identification of requirements for autonomic systems. The first section covers the systems analysis needed to understand and model the environment inwhich an autonomic systemwill be hosted. This is then followed by the consideration of a basic set of generic requirements for autonomic systems. Some research issues are identified and the discussion illustrated using aspects of the development of an autonomic cashpoint.
