ABSTRACT

Exposure to topical anesthetics may present an occupational hazard to certain workers including ophthalmologists and ophthalmologic technicians.

This chapter discusses ACD to topical analgesics and presents two cases of ACD to proparacaine with subsequent cross-sensitization to tetracaine from ophthalmic preparations. This interesting cross-sensitization phenomenon may be an underrecognized problem of ophthalmologists, related personnel, and patients who are repeatedly exposed to topical ophthalmic anesthetics.
