ABSTRACT
Although seemingly a single organ, the colon is embryologically divisible into two parts. The transverse colon and portions proximal to it are derived from the midgut and are supplied by the superior mesenteric artery, while the distal half of the colon is derived from the hindgut and receives blood from the inferior mesenteric artery.
