ABSTRACT

SEARCH FOR REVERSIBLE CAUSES OF ATRIAL FIBRILLATION The initial evaluation of a patient with atrial fibrillation includes not only a history, physical examination, and confirmation of the presence of atrial fibrillation by electrocardiography but also an effort to identify potentially reversible causes of atrial fibrillation. Reversible causes include myocardial infarction, cardiac surgery, pericarditis, alcohol use, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, hyperthyroidism, atrial septal defect, caffeine use, pheochromocytoma, chest tumor, stroke, and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.
