ABSTRACT
MEDIASTINUM The mediastinum contains the heart, great vessels, distal portion of the trachea, right and left bronchi, esophagus, thymus, autonomic nerves (cardiac and splanchnic, left recurrent laryngeal, and bilateral vagal and phrenic), various small arteries (such as bronchial and esophageal) and veins (such as bronchial, azygos, and hemiazygos), lymph nodes, cardiopulmonary lymphatics, and thoracic duct.
