ABSTRACT

INDICATIONS FOR PERMANENT PACING Guidelines for permanent pacemaker implantation were established in 1984 by a joint task force of the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology. The guidelines have been updated multiple times; the most recent were published in 2002. Indications for permanent pacing are divided into three classes: class I, pacing is acceptable and necessary; class II, pacing is probably acceptable and necessary; and class III, pacing is inappropriate. In some clinical situations, the subjective and objective data do not fit neatly into either class I or class II.
