EPIDEMIOLOGY OF PULMONARY EMBOLISM Pulmonary embolism (PE), also called pulmonary thromboembolism, is defined as the lodging of blood clot(s) in the pulmonary arterial tree.The thrombus usually originates in the systemic veins of the lower limbs and pelvis and embolizes to the pulmonary arteries, while pulmonary artery thrombosis is defined as in situ formation of blood clots in the pulmonary arteries.
