ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of recent findings on liver resection and liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Surgery remains the only curative measure for HCC. Owing to recent progress in patient selection and perioperative care, both the short-and longterm outcomes of HCC patients have been dramatically improved. This review is based on the result of a literature search, which was systematically done to create clinical practice guidelines for hepatocellular carcinoma, the first evidence-based guidelines from Japan (1,2). Search strategies are documented in the appendix. The quality of available evidence was evaluated according to the classification of evidence created by the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine at Oxford (3).
