ABSTRACT

A classification of adenocarcinomas of the esophagogastric junction (AEG) from a surgical viewpoint was introduced approximately 19 years ago (6,7), to aid in tailoring the surgical approach. Since that time, the classification has proved very useful in clinical practice (8), has been recommended by the consensus conference of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE) (9) and is increasingly used in centers all over the world (10-16) (evidence level 3).
