A drug delivery platform based on submicron particles, which can provide controlled release of drug after intravenous (IV) infusion, has been the subject of much research in recent decades. Despite some success with long-circulating liposomes providing a means of controlling the release of some hydrophilic drugs (1), the ideal controlled-release injectable delivery system that operates independently of drug properties has not been achieved to date.
