ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 will focus on two topics that extend the use of IPv4 address space — (1) Network Address Translation (NAT) and (2) IP naming services. In the first section, we will examine how NAT provides us with the ability to use the RFC 1918 addresses behind a translating device, such as a firewall or router. We can then translate addresses behind the firewall or router into valid IPv4 addresses for use on the Internet. Because the translation process permits a significant reduction in the use of IPv4 public address space, NAT conserves the use of IPv4 addresses.
