In packet-switched networks, the lower layers (data link layer, medium access control layer, and physical layer) have to solve some fundamental tasks in order to facilitate successful communication. The lower layers are concerned with communication between neighbored stations, as compared to the layers above (networking layer, transport layer), which are concerned with end-to-end communications over multiple intermediate stations.
