ABSTRACT

Pitch is a fundamental property of voiced speech. For voiced speech, the glottis opens and closes in a periodic fashion, imparting a periodic character to the excitation. The pitch period, T 0, is the time span between sequential openings of the glottis. The pitch frequency, F 0, is the reciprocal of the pitch period ( https://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> F 0 = 1 T 0 https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9780429129858/bf886850-abd4-46e0-946d-fc62ec754a35/content/eq79.tif" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/> ). In this discussion, pitch and fundamental frequency are used interchangeably. Here, pitch does not mean the perceived, subjective tonal quality of a complex sound.
