ABSTRACT

The tibial nerve, known at this level as the posterior tibial nerve, divides into its calcaneal sensory branches and the medial and lateral plantar nerve branches. The plantar nerve branches provide intrinsic motor function and sensibility to the plantar aspect of the foot. The lateral plantar nerve runs between the flexor digitorum brevis muscle and the quadratus plantae muscle forming an arch directed laterally and distally. It gives off muscular branches (rami), ramus profundus (deep branches) and ramus superficialis (superficial branches).
