ABSTRACT

One of the advantages of using digital images (either acquired using a digital camera or by converting an analog video signal or photograph to digital form) is the possibility of using computer-based image processing. This carries with it concerns over removing or, worse, creating detail in the images that may alter their effect as evidence. Certainly, there are procedures that can be used that may cause such alterations. In this chapter and the next, the methods to be reviewed are those which do not cause such problems. They can be conveniently subdivided into three groups:

1. Methods that deal with and attempt to correct the specific defects present in digital images, resulting from the hardware used to acquire them, discussed in this chapter.
