This kind of amino acid (mainly ornithine as well as phynylalanine and isoleucine) derivatives is composed of heterocyclic base named tropane, which chemically is 8-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octane. In its hydroxylated form it is esterified with different types of acids usually optically active.1,2 There are two kinds of hydroxytropane derivatives that differ in the spatial orientation of free –OH group at position C-3. They comprise tropine (tropanol, endo-8-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octane-3-ol) and pseudotropine (pseudo-tropanol, exo-8-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octane-3-ol), which usually are esterified with the following acids: ()-(S)-tropic, apotropic, cinnamic, angelic, tiglic, isovaleric, and a-truxillic ones.2 Figure 26.1 presents stereochemical structures of typical tropane alkaloids representatives. They include the most often encountered alkaloids such as: ()-(S)-hyoscyamine (named also as L-hyoscyamine),

its racemic form called atropine, scopolamine (so-called hyoscyne), some new compounds such as consabatine and merresectine B.4 Among pseudo-tropine type of alkaloid, cocaine is derivative of ecgonine (pseudotropine-2a-carboxilic acid). Other esterified derivatives of ecgonine such as with cinnamic acid are also encountered.
