ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Evidence for the deleterious consequences of pediatric sleep disruption and disorders is growing. Several chapters of this volume review the cumulative findings suggesting that long-term developmental consequences may result from untreated sleep disorders during early childhood. While pediatric sleep medicine and research are rapidly expanding and tremendous advances have been made, this increasing appreciation of the importance of sleep and the effects of sleep disorders emphasizes the need for a broader understanding of normative aspects of sleep.
