ABSTRACT
This section describes the use of lasers for length measurement. Today the unit of length is defined by the speed of light. Its practical realization is based on frequency-stabilized lasers. For high precision and traceable length measurements, the use of laser interferometers is today state of the art; but for industrial applications laser interferometers and grating scales with interferometric readouts are also widely used.
