ABSTRACT

Chapter 10 discussed the difference between electrical conduction, semiconduction, superconduction, and insulation. This chapter continues the discussion of electrical properties, followed by a review of magnetic and optical properties. Specific topics include dielectric polarization, dielectric constant, dielectric loss, dielectric strength, capacitors, ferroelectricity, pyroelectricity, piezoelectricity, ferromagnetism, ferrimagnetism, paramagnetism, electromagnetic spectrum, absorption, transparency, index of refraction, color, phosphorescence, and lasers. Although some of these terms sound difficult and mysterious, they are really quite simple to understand.
