ABSTRACT

Most modern-day block ciphers are product ciphers (product ciphers were introduced in Section 2.7). Product ciphers frequently incorporate a sequence of permutation and substitution operations. A commonly used design is that of an iterated cipher. Here is a description of a typical iterated cipher: The cipher requires the specification of a round function and a key schedule, and the encryption of a plaintext will proceed through similar rounds.
