ABSTRACT
Amongst all rings, the ring Z of integers and the ring R of real numbers have special properties that make them easy to manipulate. For example, nonzero integers may be canceled from equations, and nonzero real numbers have multiplicative inverses. The special properties are formalized in the concepts of “integral domain” and “field.”
