ABSTRACT

Materials have dened much of human history: the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. In each of these instances, the materials man used to make tools dened the era. Pre-historic man produced knives and arrowheads by chipping or grinding stone and bone. Toolmaking represents one of the earliest applications of intelligent energy eld manufacturing. In this case, the energy eld is mechanical and it is intelligent because it is applied with a purpose. The application of energy elds to materials, combined with an ability to accurately predict the response of the material, is one early version of materials science.
