One of the most remarkable achievements in chemical oceanography in recent decades has been the clarification of the distribution of trace levels of biogeochemically active elements, metals, and organic pollutants. This success is attributed not only to the development of sophisticated analytical techniques, but also to the continuous and strenuous efforts of marine chemists to develop clean sampling and noncontaminating treatment techniques for seawater.
