ABSTRACT

Design of Input and Output Devices An input device is a mechanism to communicate intention or action to a (technology) system. The button is a classical input device. Pushing buttons to get a receipt from an automated gasoline pump, to set time and temperature settings for a microwave oven, and to dial a number on a telephony device are all examples of actions taken with input devices. So too is speaking into a microphone system to order a meal from a drivethrough restaurant or to respond to an automated voice response system with a menu item (e.g., in response to the prompt to “press or say one”).
