This chapter brie y surveys the international space community and the law that has been establish for its management. It is intended as a source of references for any reader interested in learning more about the actors in outer space and the laws relevant to activities there. Provisions in the modern law of the sea offer potentially useful examples of archaeological protections that could provide a basis for considering archaeological provisions in space law. For this reason, short explications of relevant terms in maritime law are included. The chapter closes with a brief discussion of issues related to preservation of space artifacts and some suggestions for moving toward international agreement on archaeology in outer space.
