ABSTRACT
There is considerable interest in identifying and classifying the “holes” in a topological space. The annulus has a hole in its center, and so does the unit sphere. See Figure 3.1. But one has a sense that these two holes are different in nature. They are (perhaps) holes of different dimensions. Homotopy theory helps us to sort out these ideas.
