Appendices Appendix I: Collection and handling of bacteriological and viral obstetrics and gynecology specimens

The Gram stain is used to determine morphological bacterial types, aid in the selection of culture media, and assess specimen quality (Table A.1). Smears should be examined for both microorganisms and cells. It is important to assess the morphology and quantity of microorganisms present. Microorganisms are seen on smears only if present in the specimen at a concentration of greater than or equal to 104organisms/mL.
