ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the application of Fuzzy modelling (FM) to develop a mathematical model for the foraging behavior of ants and a first step in this direction by applying FM to transform a verbal description of the foraging behavior of ants into a well-defined mathematical model. It provides a highly simplified, yet hopefully intuitive, introduction to fuzzy modelling. The chapter reviews the foraging behavior of social ants and FM to transform the verbal description into a simple mathematical model describing the behavior of a single ant. It utilizes to develop a stochastic model for the behavior of a colony of identical ants. FM was applied to transform verbal descriptions of various animal behaviors into mathematical models. The chapter also reviews an averaged model of the colony and devotes to studying this averaged model using simulations and rigorous analysis, respectively and concludes with some possible directions for further research.
