ABSTRACT
In communication systems, the goal is to transmit information rapidly with the minimum amount of unwanted noise or error. How can this best be achieved? Familiar forms of communication are sound, telephone, radio, and television (TV). Sound uses the vibrations of air as its physical medium, whereas telephone, radio, and TV use electromagnetic waves in metal wire, in air, or in space. Each uses its own particular technology, and each serves different purposes.
