ABSTRACT
The earliest machines that calculated or computed were mechanical. They used physical objects, such as gears and other mechanisms, to record and process information. Modern computers use silicon-based electronic circuits. In later chapters, we will explore the physical basis of such semiconductor circuits. The communication networks that make up the Internet send information between computers on the network.
