ABSTRACT

Multicell Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes, generally known as silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs), are a new type of photodetector that has experienced fast development in the last few years. The name silicon photomultiplier is applied to devices with the same working principle, also called metal-resistor-semiconductor avalanche photodiodes (MRS APDs), multipixel photon counters (MPPCs), solid-state photomultipliers (SSPMs), avalanche microchannel photodiodes (AMPDs), micropixel avalanche photodiodes (MAPDs), and so on.
