ABSTRACT

Optical fi ber amplifi ers are dominating the loss compensation in fi ber-optic communication systems, especially the erbium-doped types, for communication spectra based on silica fi bers. Several models have been developed for such photonic amplifi cation devices. However, there are no comprehensive models developed on the MATLAB® and Simulink® platforms. This chapter describes in detail the development of a Simulink model for erbium-doped fi ber amplifi ers (EDFAs) operating under steady state and dynamic conditions.
