ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the mechanism and properties of lightwave-modulated signals when propagating in optical fi bers, only in single-mode optical fi bers (SMF), in particular, standard SMF (SSMF), nonzero dispersion-shifted fi bers (NZDSF), and dispersion-compensating fi bers. Attenuation and dispersion effects, the two principal phenomena in the design of transmission systems, are also described in detail.
