ABSTRACT

Federal agencies overseeing the use of animal research in the United States of America include the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Animal Welfare Act (AWA), a U.S. federal law, is enforced by the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), whose responsibilities include monitoring that research facilities register with the USDA and conducting unannounced yearly inspections of the facilities.
