ABSTRACT

Cincinnati: “Queen of the West.” ˜is nickname was bestowed on Cincinnati in the 1800s, and has carried into today as the “Queen City.” Among its distinctions in the 1800s was its position as the fastest-growing city in the nation, the largest city in Ohio, and the largest river port on the Ohio River. Another less ©attering name given to Cincinnati was “Porkopolis.”1 ˜is happened because the city emerged as the pork butchering and packing center of the Western world. ˜e old saying was that when the butchering was done, there was nothing le° of the pig except its squeal.
