ABSTRACT

A number of accidents worldwide such as those at Flixborough (1974), Seveso (1976), Bhopal (1984), Pasadena (1989), and so on have led to growing concern about the potential hazards and risks involved in chemical process industries (CPIs; Kim et al., 1995; Khan and Abbasi, 1998). Such industrial accidents may cause serious injury to people and/or severe damage to infrastructures within and beyond the immediate vicinity of the workplace. Top 10 industrial disasters based on fatality estimates, which occurred between 1945 and 1990, are shown in Table 12.1 (UNEP, 2000).
