ABSTRACT

Ants exist almost everywhere in the world, from the trop ics to the Artie and Antartic. Their success as empire builders lies in their ceaseless industry, their high degree of organization and mutual cooperation, and their extreme specialization. Ants not only have queen, work ers, and drones, as the bees do, but also have professional soldiers, that not only defend the nest but invade other colonies to carry off workers, which then become their slaves (1). Because the bites and stings of most ants are rarely more than a transient annoyance and only occa sionally lead to allergic reactions, they will not be dis cussed here. Two types of ants will be discussed, the har vester ant and imported fire ant.
