ABSTRACT

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) or HHV-4 is a ubiquitous virus that infects humans worldwide. EBV belongs to the gamma subfamily of herpesviruses and the Lymphocryptovirus genus. EBV has 89 genes, 43 being common to the other herpesviruses and 46 noncore genes. Six of the noncore genes are common to the beta and gamma herpesviruses, 12 are specic to the gamma subfamily, and 28 are specic to EBV [1]. Its structure is characterized by short and long sequence domains (containing almost all genome coding capacity) and internal and terminal tandem (up to 20) and reiterated repeats [2].
