ABSTRACT

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is a cross-disciplinary field whose aim is to protect the safety, health, and welfare of people engaged in work or employment. With OSH covering a vast range of industries and occupations, and with its focus on a diverse set of workplace challenges (e.g., hazards and exposures, diseases and injuries, safety and prevention, chemicals, and emergency preparedness and response), safety and health in the workplace introduce a level of complexity that requires innovative approaches to prevention and control. Researchers, practitioners, and employers focus on establishing and maintaining a safe working environment for all workers. Thus, workplace safety has become extremely important in an era of escalating health care costs and an increasingly litigious response to on-the-job accidents and fatalities. When workplace safety is managed appropriately, employers often see a decline in organizational costs, but also in organizational reputation.
