ABSTRACT

Developing a planned approach to performance-based contracting is desirable versus a reactive approach of suddenly dealing with a contract renewal from a large payer that forces a rapid response. Interoperable health information technology has the potential to create greater efficiency in health care delivery. An active and ongoing program to evaluate and modify the clinical practice patterns of the physician participants so as to create a high degree of interdependence and collaboration among the physicians to control costs and ensure quality. Many large, family-owned local corporations are selling to larger industrial enterprises as owners retire or see little chance to be a leader in the economic decline. Planning steps to get the performance-based medicine approach to managed care contracting requires physicians and hospitals to first look at what is being done. Organizational structure within the structure management occurs at different paces and urgency.
