ABSTRACT

In the face of healthcare reform, regardless of its final political outcome, one thing is for sure and will never be unraveled. The advancements in healthcare information technology (HIT) will not slow down or be abandoned. Healthcare payment reform transforms the entire healthcare reimbursement system from fee-for-service to value-based payment—paying for good outcomes rather than quantity of care. Pilot projects will test new payment methods and delivery models. Health insurance reform expands coverage, makes features and costs of plans transparent, and removes the barriers to enrollment created by preexisting condition considerations. These three realities will have positive and negative effects in a world of capitated or bundled reimbursement for healthcare services. The Provider Organization HIT Committee will focus on the implications of payment reform that will lead to delivery system reform.
