Metalloproteins constitute between one-third and one-half of the proteome of living organisms (Thomson and Gray 1998; Harding, Nowicki, and Walkinshaw 2010), and around 40% of the proteins deposited in the Protein Data Bank contain metals (Harding, Nowicki, and Walkinshaw 2010).
