ABSTRACT

Corrections in the juvenile system are generally classified into two general areas, community corrections and institutions. Community corrections refer to those programs in which the juvenile is “corrected” within his or her community. In this chapter, we will use the term juvenile institutions to refer to those institutions in which the juvenile is placed in some type of custody similar to adult confinement institutions, for example, jails and correctional institutions. Like adult confinement facilities, juvenile institutions vary according to states and local jurisdictions. Accordingly, the discussion in this chapter will examine the institutions in general.
