ABSTRACT

Currently, juveniles who have been adjudicated as delinquent and committed may be held in one of six types of facilities:

1. Detention centers

2. Shelters

3. Reception/diagnostic centers

4. Training schools

5. Ranches or camps

6. Halfway houses or group homes

Detention centers are short-term, secure facilities that hold juveniles awaiting adjudication, disposition, or placement in an institution. Shelters are also short-term facilities that are operated like detention centers, but are nonsecure with an unrestricted physical environment. Reception/diagnostic centers are also short-term facilities. They are used to screen youths for assignments to appropriate levels of custody and institution.
